🌳 Fun Facts About the Distribution of Vancouver Trees
Project type
Data Visualization
Date
May 2023
Location
Vancouver, Canada
An interactive data exploration of urban forestry, community planning, and hidden patterns in one of Canada’s greenest cities.
Vancouver has long envisioned itself as the greenest city in the world — and its streetscapes tell a story. In this project, we dive into publicly available urban forestry data to explore how trees are distributed across neighborhoods, how their presence interacts with urban form and affluence, and whether there's more logic than randomness in their location, size, and growth patterns.
Through an interactive dashboard, we seek to answer:
📌 Key Questions of Interest:
How has the distribution of trees evolved over the years across different Vancouver neighborhoods?
→ We analyze planting dates and map spatial trends to observe how green density has shifted with urban development.
How do trees differ across Vancouver’s streets and sides?
→ Are some avenues consistently greener than others? Do certain sides of the street get more foliage?
Which neighborhood is surrounded by the largest trees in the city?
→ We look at tree diameter (DBH) and age to identify areas dominated by Vancouver’s urban giants.
Which size category — small, medium, or large — dominates the city’s tree population?
→ We explore tree size distribution citywide to identify natural patterns or planting policies in action.
